17th Century Antique Transylvanian Rug, Country of Origin: Turkey, Circa Date: 17th Century – This unique Transylvanian carpet illustrates the far reaching influences that have blurred the borders between regional weaving traditions. Ram’s horn motifs, goz symbols, tiny roundels and ancient protection symbols are used throughout the field and borders. Outer guardbands decorated with stars set against a contrasting background enclose the traditional Transylvanian borders, which feature recessed cartouches divided by trefoil motifs that form a distinctly Islamic tile pattern. Extended latch hooks embellish the poly-chromatic outlines that separate the inset medallion from the field and mihrab-like spandrels. Juxtaposed vases decorated with stylized branches and pendulous fruits form a sprawling pattern across the vibrant lozenge medallion. This exceptional 17th century carpet from Transylvania is woven with a vibrant combination of red, blue, green and ivory with striking similarities to the color palettes used in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus.
